Samsung Puts a Fresh Spin on the 2-in-1

A guy can admit when he’s wrong, yes? Well, I’m here to state on the record that after I had kissed off computers operating the Windows 10 operating system this past year, I’m starting to like them again. Some of them, in fact, I’m fancying a lot.

Samsung’s New Notebook
Such is the case with Samsung’s new Notebook 7 spin 15.6-inch laptop that sports a high-performing Intel Core i7 processor, a 1 Terabyte hard drive, 16GB of RAM and a NVIDIA 940MX GPU for XBOX gaming. My favorite feature is its brilliant full high-definition 1920 x 1080 screen with a new High Dynamic Range (HDR) video mode that boosts contrast, crispness, and overall viewing enjoyment. Another characteristic of this machine I love is its backlit keyboard that rotates 360 degrees and underneath the screen to sleekly transform the laptop into tablet mode. Yet you can stop the rotation at any point and feel confident that it will hold in place. There’s just the right amount of glide and friction in the rotation.
Honestly, I’ve been testing the 7 Spin for more than a week now on loan from Samsung and I never want to give it back. Of course, I will, but not a day before my test period expires. It’s a pleasure to work on. The keyboard is generously spacious, the speed is instantaneous both within programs and shuffling between them, I can run many windows at once, and the display seems to remove any strain from my eyes. Because it’s a touchscreen, I keep catching myself pinching and zooming as I work on it — just for the sake of doing so. In fact, I’m writing this article on the machine and have periodically zoomed in just to see how crisp the letters stay as I magnify them.
At nighttime, I’ve propped it up into tent mode — where the 7 spin kind of stands up on my lap with the screen facing me — and have been binge-watching some TV shows that I missed out on during the spring. It’s like having my own private theater. In the two weeks, I’ve been watching shows, I’ve never seen the machine buffer once — something I can’t say about others like it that I’ve tested.
The battery completely recharges in about 90 minutes, giving it nearly six hours of juice in my testing. It weighs five pounds and offers several USB ports (including a USB-C option) and a 3-in-1 (SD/SDHC/SDXC) slot.

I’m convinced that this is what Microsoft had in mind when it debuted Windows 10 — a fluid, fast system that responds instantly to your every command. Costing more than $1,000, the 7 spin is not necessarily for students during this back-to-school stretch. It’s probably overkill — unless your student is really into gaming (and studying, of course), I suppose. However, I can’t help but think of how many parents might see it and buy it for their children, and then decide to keep it while giving their student their previous laptop as a hand-me-down.
Again, I could be totally wrong about that. But I know I’m right in that the 7 spin has made me a believer in Windows again.
